If you need help, please use the encfs-users mailing list. See also the extended introduction page if you are new to EncFS. This is a big advantage in some ways, but does not come without a cost. The way Encfs works is different from the вЂњloopbackвЂќ encrypted filesystem support built into the Linux kernel because it works on files at a time, not an entire block device. EncFS is open source software, licensed under the GPL.ДЄs with most encrypted filesystems, Encfs is meant to provide security against off-line attacks ie your notebook or backups fall into the wrong hands, etc. You can find links to source and binary releases below.

It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. That move allowed for an increase in DiskCryptors stability, eliminated many problems associated with file systems, and created an optimal format for further development of the program.Д®ncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. Starting from DiskCryptor 0.5, the program relies upon its own partition format, developed specifically for encrypting partitions with data on them, as TrueCrypt format has been originally meant for creation of empty volumes. Moreover, in the future, considerable effort will be devoted to the creation of detailed documentation, explaining the internal mechanics of the program, which would be the best confirmation and demonstration of its security.ДiskCryptor releases from 0.1 to 0.4 were fully compatible with TrueCrypt, as they used a corresponding partition format and encrypted data with AES-256 algorithm in LRW mode.

Now, however, the aim of the development of the project is to create the best product in its category.

#LINUX TRUECRYPT ALTERNATIVE PLUS#

Originally, DiskCryptor was conceived as a replacement for DriveCrypt Plus Pack and PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE). There are other alternatives with similar functionality, but they are fully proprietary ones, which makes them unacceptable to use for protection of confidential data.

#LINUX TRUECRYPT ALTERNATIVE CODE#

However, because of the restrictive license under which TrueCrypt is provided - the TrueCrypt Collective License - TrueCrypt cannot be classified as a truly free software, as it places limits on the use and modification of its source code by developers. The only open-source alternative to DiskCryptor that has comparable features is TrueCrypt. The main criteria for open-source software is the availability of its source code under one of the open source licenses.

It is not considered Open Source as defined by the Open Source Initiative or free software as defined by the Free Software Foundation and no major GNU/Linux distribution (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Gentoo) has accepted it because of license restrictions that are incompatible with being free/libre and open source.ДiskCryptor is the only truly free solution, provided under GNU General Public License (GPLv3), which offers encryption of all disk partitions, including the system partition. While TrueCrypt is source-public, it is a misconception that it is open source or free software.
